INVESTING | Real Estate Sector

A Sector is a broad selection of companies with similar characteristics. An Industry is a subset of Sectors where companies are grouped in more specifically than Sectors.


Investors can use Sectors and Industries to efficiently classify and compare companies. Comparing companies with shared Sector and Industry allows an investor to identify relative strengths and weaknesses. Comparing companies across different Sectors and Industries can help identify relationships and trends.


The Real Estate Sector includes Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), both property management and property development companies.


The Real Estate sector includes the following two industries:

  1. Equity Real Estate Investment Trusts

  2. Real Estate Management & Development

The total value of the Real Estate Sector in the United States is approximately $1.2 trillion.

Real Estate includes companies like CBRE Group Inc, Apartment Investment and Management, and American Tower Corp.
